Ar draws Yr Iwerydd

Third US President Thomas Jefferson, of Welsh descent, and a message as timely today as ever

Erthygl Gymraeg. English language version below.

DDOE( Gorffennaf 4), roedd hi’n ddiwrnod  dathlu Annibyniaeth America ac fe gafwyd tipyn o sbloet gwladgarol i ddathlu’r achlysur eleni a dweud y lleiaf.

Byddai llawer yn dweud mai dylanwad digon difaol a fu America dros flynyddoedd mawr, a hithau wedi ymyrryd yn filwrol mewn cymaint o wledydd a thywallt cymaint o waed yn y broses. A bod hynny wastad yn taflu cysgod dros y dathliadau hyn.

Byddai eraill wedyn yn teimlo fod yr holl sioe ddoe yn enghraifft  berffaith o natur rodresgar America ei hun,heb son am gymeriad bostfawr ei harlywydd presennol!

Dathliad o botensial gwlad i’r dyfodol

Ond wedyn, diwrnod annibyniaeth ydi diwrnod annibyniaeth beth bynnag fo hanes unrhyw wlad. Uwchlaw popeth, mae’n ddathliad o’r potensial sydd gan unrhyw wlad a’i phobol i’r dyfodol. Diwrnod ar gyfer gwlad yn ei chyfanrwydd y tu hwnt i unrhyw wleidyddiaeth bleidiol.

Eleni, penderfynodd y cyfryngau priflif, CNN, ABC, NBC ayb i anwybyddu’r dathliadau yn llwyr gan wrthod dangos unrhyw luniau cymaint yw eu gwrthwynebiad i’r Arlwydd.  Nid fod hynny’n ormod o broblem a dweud y gwir o gofio fod gwylwyr y cyfryngau priflif yn plymio( CNN wedi colli 33% o’u gwylwyr eleni) a chymaint o utubers wedi darlledu’r digwyddiad ar eu sianelau eu hunain beth bynnag.

16 o lofnodwyr y Datganiad o dras Cymreig

Wrth i America ddathlu ei phenblwydd yn 243 oed ddoe, mae’n werth cofio  mai Cymry oedd y grwp ethnig mwya niferus ar y Datganiad o Annibyniaeth  a arwydddwyd yn Philadelphia gan y 13 talaith wreiddiol ar Orffennaf 4, 1776.

Roedd dim llai nag 16 o’r llofnodwyr o dras Cymreig gyda theulu un o’r Arlywyddion cyntaf, Thomas Jefferson hefyd wrth gwrs yn hannu o Eryri.

Roedd hyn oll fel pe bai mwy o arwyddocad iddo eleni o gofio fod yr ymgyrch dros annibyniaeth i Gymru wedi datblygu cymaint dros y 18 mis diwethaf ac yn codi stem cynyddol eleni.

Yr wythnos hon, pleidleisiodd yr 8ed Cyngor lleol o blaid annibyniaeth.  Gan ddilyn esiampl Machynlleth, Porthmadog, Ffestiniog, Nefyn, Trawsfynydd, Bethesda, Llanymstumdwy, Llanuwchllyn pleidleisiodd Cyngor Tref Caernarfon o blaid annibyniaeth yr wythnos hon.

Datganiad Cyngor Tref yn briodol iawn

Roedd hynny’n briodol iawn mewn ffordd o gofio ei bod bron 50 mlynedd i’r diwrnod ers Arwisgo Charles Windsor yn y dref yn  1969.

Gyda phenderfyniad y cyngor tref yn gwned yn iawn hefyd  am yr embaras o weld Maer Plaid Cymru y dref yn yn cyhoeddi ei fod yn  “siomedig” na fyddai “Prince Charles” ddim yn  ymweld a’r dref ar ei ymweliad gyda Chymru yr wythnos hon.

Roedd cyhoeddiad Cyngor Tref Caernarfon hefyd yn arwyddcaol gan fod yr Ail Orymdaith dros annibyniaeth i’w chynnal yn y dref ar ddydd Sadwrn, Gorffennaf 27ain.

Y tro hwn, mae’r trefnwyr wedi penderfynu na fydd cynrychiolwyr o’r pleidiau gwleidyddol yn siarad ar yr orymdaith gyda’r pwyslais wedi ei osod ar fynegiannau diwylliannol o annibyniaeth.

Ond bydd cyfle i’r sawl sydd yn awchu am fwy o gig gwleidyddol fynychu Fforwm Trafod sydd i’w chynnal yn dilyn yr orymdaith o’r enw  “Llunio Llwybr Ar Gyfer Annibyniaeth“. Mae gwahoddiadau wedi’u hestyn i’r dair plaid pro-annibyniaeth i Gymru, Plaid Cymru, Cymru Sofran a GWLAD i’r digwyddiad hwn yng nghlwb Copa yn y dref.

Llunio llwybr tuag  at annibyniaeth

Y bwriad yw trafod sut y gellid symud yn ymarferol tuag at annibyniaeth dros y blynyddoedd nesaf a macsimeiddio’r bleidlais pro-annibyniaeth mewn gwahanol ardaloedd ar gyfer Etholiad Cymru yn 2021.

Y gobaith yw y gallai osod y seiliau ar gyfer creu Confensiwn Annibyniaeth a fyddai’n cynnwys yr holl bleidiau  a grwpiau dros annibyniaeth i Gymru. Bu Confensiwn o’r fath mewn bodolaeth yn yr Alban ers rhai blynyddoedd ac mae hwn wedi chwarae rhan bwysig yng nghryfder yr achos annibyniaeth yno.

Byddai hefyd yn fynegiant pellach o eiriau doeth Thomas Jefferson am yr angenrheidrwydd i feithrin ysbryd o wrthryfel mewn pob gwlad o dro i dro.

Independence over there and over here

YESTERDAY( July 4) was the American Day of Independence, and the celebrations this year were even more patriotic and raucous than usual.

Many will say that America’s long record of imperialism and meddling in other countries’ afffairs over the years always throws a deep shadow over these occasions. Others might well think that the overblown nature of yesterday’s celebrations  sum up the in your face nature of Americans, as well as the bombastic character of its present President come to that!

A celebration of a nation’s potential

But even so, Independence day is Independence day for every single country however chequered its  history has been. For in effect, it’s all about a celebration of a nation and its people’s potential for the future. A day for a nation in its totality, beyond any political tribalism.

Incredibly, this year the mainstream media in the US such as CNN, ABC and NBC decided not to cover the celebrations at all such is their vitriol towards the incumbent President.

In days gone by of course, this would have been fatal for any such event, but with the mainstream media leaking viewers to such an extent( CNN down 33% this year alone) it hardly seemed to matter, with so many Utubers providing their own coverage of the events anyway.

Welsh influence on the Declaration of Independence

It’s always worth remembering of course that Welshmen formed the largest ethnic group amongst the signatories of the Declaration of Independence signed in Philadelphia on July 4 1776.

No fewer than 16 of the signatories were of Welsh descent and indeed, the third President, Thomas Jefferson’s family hailed from Eryri(Snowdonia).

And watching the coverage from Wales seemed to have a deeper import this year, in view of the fact that the Welsh Independence Campaign is growing exponentially on a month to month basis here.

This week, Caernarfon Town Council became the 8th local council to declare for Indy( following the example set by Machynlleth, Porthmadog, FFestiniog, Nefyn, Llanymstumdwy, Llanuwchllyn, Bethesda and Trawsfynydd).

Town Council’s timely decision

Caernarfon’s declaration seemed most appropriate in view of the fact that it came almost 50 years to the day that the Investiture of Charles Windsor was held in the town.

And went some of the way to counteract the embarassing comments of its Plaid Mayor earlier in the week when he expressed his disappointment that Charles Windsor wouldn’t be visiting the town as part of his “Welsh tour” this week.

The declaration was also very appropriate in view of the fact that the second national independence march is due to take place in the town on July 27. The rally is being organised jointly by AUOB, and YES Caernarfon.

A roadmap for Independence

No representatives of any political party have been invited to speak this time, with an emphasis placed on the artistic and cultural expressions of Independence.

But for those who want some more political beef as part of the event, an additional event is being organised after  the rally itself.

A “Roadmap to Independence” forum will be held at Y Copa, with invitations extended to all three pro-independence political parties, Plaid,Sovereign Wales and GWLAD.

The political parties will be invited to consider how Cymru can practically move towards independence over the next few years and maximise the pro-independence vote in different areas in the next Welsh Election in 2021.

Hopefully, it can lay the ground for a Welsh Independence Convention which can bring together all the parties and groups  who are in favour of Independence. Such a Convention has been part and parcel of the Scottish political scene for many years and has played a big part in the strength of pro-independence cause in Scotland today.

And such a convention would be a further expression of Thomas Jefferson’s wise words concerning the necessity for periodic rebellion in the political world of every nation.
